The Second Family Phenomenon as a Vessel of Emotional Support for Generation Z
second family
Abstract
The second family phenomenon in this article is defined as a secondary family in the form of close social relationships, such as friendships, partners, coworkers, and communities that provide emotional support. In everyday life, a second family often serves as a place for someone to feel accepted, heard, and receive support when facing life's stressors. However, when someone is immersed in social circles outside the home, attention to the first family can diminish. In this study, the method used was a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). These findings confirm that society, especially families and educators, needs to understand that Generation Z's need for a second family is a natural need for social relationships in the digital age. More importantly, fostering awareness of the importance of maintaining a balance between the two, so that the second family can function as a support for mental health without diminishing relationships with the nuclear family.
